spelling.gifUsing your spelling words, complete one task for each day of the week. Complete all activities on binder paper and turn it in as a packet on Friday. Be sure to write the date at the top of the page for each task!

SPELLING MENU - Choose one task and record.

  • Write spelling words in ABC order.
  • Write spelling words five times each.
  • Sort spelling words by number of letters.
  • Group spelling words by number of syllables.
  • Sort spelling words by spelling pattern (i.e. all the words using ay, ai, or eigh).
  • Sort spelling words into rhyming groups. Have one group for words that do not have any rhyming matches.
  • Sort words any way you want and label each group. Be creative, and be prepared to share your results.
  • Cut spelling words out of magazines or newspaper and glue in notebook.
  • Write each spelling word three different ways, 2 incorrectly and one correctly, then circle or underline the correct spelling (ex: trafic, traffick, traffic).
  • Use a dictionary to break words up into separate syllables (ex: im•pres•sive).
  • Write a spelling rule for each word. (ex: Use -ck in the word back because the /k/ sound comes after a short vowel).
  • Write your words in your neatest 4th grade handwriting. Then write each word again using cursive, bubble letters or in another kind of fancy or creative way.
  • Type your words on a computer and choose a font for each word that goes along with its meaning. Cut the list out and paste into your spelling notebook.



  • Write a scholary sentence for each spelling word.
  • Write a story using your spelling words and highlight your spelling words.
  • Make Super Sentences - use as many words as you can in one sentence.
  • Write the dictionary definition(s) for each word.
  • Use a thesaurus to write a synonym and antonym for each word.
